A Diary Of Impromptu Performances

Dangerous Bodegas, is a documentation of a month-long tour with musician and vocalist Brian Criner, around the U.S. and Canada in June 2013, promoting his first Indie Electro Pop single, titled Feel Something.

I met Brian in late 2011; he was one of my roommates in this three-bedroom apartment in Prospect Heights. At the time, he was playing keyboards with Shirley House, while working on his Dangerous Cans solo project. I would listen to his music through the sheet wall, which separated our rooms, and man, it sounded so damn good! So I asked him if he needed any help with the drums section on stage.

Long story short, we started jamming, and a few months later, Dangerous Cans booked the first gig in Brooklyn. In April 2013, we played the album release show in Knitting Factory, and Brian was working on the tour dates. As part of the promotion, he had this idea to do impromptu performances with a Boom Box outside Deli Shops.

He did the first one at the Deli across the street from where we lived, on the corner of Prospect Place and Classon Avenue. I took my camera and shot a video and several still images. The idea of Dangerous Bodegas had just emerged!

The 7 minutes video below, is a collection of material shot during our tour across the United States and Canada. (No sound after 2:14)

On The Road With Brian and Brian

And so here we are, hitting the road on June 1st, 2013, Brian Criner, his friend from college Brian Petersen, who contributed the vehicle, and myself, trading gas tank distances behind the wheel. The first stop and first gig outside the U.S. were Montreal, followed by Toronto, wherein our day off, and we visited my uncle Stelios from Lemnos island in his dinner “Yellow Submarine.”

After that came Detroit, Grand Rapids, Chicago, Washington, and off we were non stop from D.C. to Santa Fe in one breath… Finally, we arrived in San Fransisco, where we roamed for two weeks taking the time to enjoy the fantastic nature around the Big Sur and the Red Woods before we reach our final destination in Los Angeles.

During this tour, I shot hours of video, dozens of film rolls, and a couple of thousands of digital shots, which at some point, I intend to do something with it, probably a show and a book.

For the moment, it all sits in my hard drives and film cases, waiting for me to attend, time will come. I just thought I wanted to share some of it here with you, so welcome aboard and enjoy the raw material.
